Tested for Life – FourSure 44

FourSure 44 chair proven to last more than 50 years of extreme use!!!

That’s what we call “Tested for Life!”

Four Design believes so strongly in their product they set up the chair in their test lab and subjected it to all the relevant tests to prove it could last a minimum of 50 years – that’s mighty impressive!

Four Design continuously tests their products to European and American standards e.g. EN and ANSI-BIFMA. These standards specify test methods for determining the strength and durability of the design regardless of use, materials, or design/construction, as part of their commitment to delivering high-quality long-lasting furniture.

Achieving these test standards is demanding. Products are subjected to physical stresses that simulate what the furniture could be exposed to over a 10-year period.

Over 1.5 years the chair was exposed to loads that meet EN 16139 level 2 … five times over!

FourSure 44 chair already has the ANSI/BIFMA x 5.1 Level 2 for severe heavy-duty such as prisons, barracks, transport terminals and other demanding environments, making it the perfect choice for educational and public institutions. With that impressive safety and durability pedigree, it shines as the epitome of Danish comfort and design, nothing has been sacrificed to ensure this chair a place among the icons of Scandinavian furniture.

Seat and back load test – 1 Million sits!

This is how many times Four Design’s test machine has simulated someone sitting themselves down in the chair, leaning back, then getting out of the chair. The test equipment is set to test a 110kg load for each ‘sit’ and simulates a person’s movements sitting on the chair then standing up again. This tests the construction of the frame, seat, and back. After the “50-year test” there was no change in the chair’s structure, or comfort level.

500,000 times! From side to side

You know it! You sit on the chair, but you don’t sit still.

You lean forward a little. You move slightly from side to side. You may not be aware of it, but your movements are picked up by the chair, and the load is taken up in the construction to ensure you are always sitting comfortably.

This load is also part of the test. The chair is tested with a load of 80 kg moving from side to side to simulate a person changing position in the chair. This places a particular load on the frame along with a risk of breakage as it is exposed to an uneven load. Again – FourSure 44 passed with flying colours!

General Load & Break test

We all know we shouldn’t tilt a chair on just 2 of it’s 4 legs right?

Rock forwards, backwards and to both sides – the legs on the opposite side lift off the ground until you simply let the chair drop back down in free fall. Imagine you do this 10,000 times in each direction!

Your movements form the basis for a specific test, where this movement is simulated with a load of 85 kg moving forwards and backwards, and 45.5 kg from side to side. The test proves the strength of the chair and must be passed in order to achieve German GS certification.

Can it really stand up to it?

We think you’ll agree this rigorous testing over a compressed 50 years has a lot to say about the ability of this seemingly slender, elegant chair to withstand a punishing life, retaining its structural integrity and good looks whilst over-delivering on safety. We have delivered thousands of these iconic 4-leg, polyshell stacking chairs to universities, lecture halls, schools, work and public spaces throughout Australia where they will outperform their competition remaining smart, comfortable, and highly functional for the next 50 years. And when the time comes they can be quickly and easily disassembled for recycling ensuring a responsible footprint.
